Condamine Street runs straight through the middle of this suburb, and it's done double duty for decades: retail and light-industrial shops at street level, with walk-up flats and newer unit blocks stacked in behind. The B-Line bus corridor follows the same road, feeding a Park&Ride multi-deck car park at Kenneth Road.

That corridor has changed the pipe mix. Older post-war brick and fibro houses on the valley slopes still run their original drainage, while the unit blocks along the strip have been renewed in stages as each one gets upgraded.

Schools sit on both sides of that mix too, from Manly Vale Public and St Kieran's Catholic Primary through to Mackellar Girls Campus. More kids through more bathrooms on a school morning is exactly when an ageing line shows its limits.
